We’re going to start a new series on our blog. I know, we haven’t had any other “series” yet, but I’ve thought a fun thing to highlight and we’re going to do it gradually or it will never happen. Micro-enterprise. Most of you know that i’ve worked with micro-loans before and that Josh and I are economics nerds….
The first person in our Micro-Enterprise Series is Lexi’s Seamstress. Unfortuantely, I have forgotten her name and I am embarrased to ask again….so maybe being so transparent with the world about the impersonal nature of our realtionship will encourage me to ask her.
Shop is located: at the bottom of our hill in a white tile building…but it is located in the janitor’s closet next to the stairwell.
Shop includes: 2 sewing machines, a place to store the fabric, a bench outside and a bench in the back corner.
Shop seems to employ: 4 people – 2 seamstresses, one seems to be an apprentice. The fourth lady in the picture is a client.
In addition to being a seamstress they also have a phone which they use to charge other people to make phone calls…this is another VERY common micro-enterprise all around the city. So far this woman has made a skirt for me and she has made some pants I had brought back from the states into capris. Fabulous lady! Picture of skirt to come later.
Here is a picture of their shop:
